our trip to oregon: astoria

Our last stop on the Coast was Astoria. We rode the cute little Old Fashioned Trolley all along the Columbia River. But that was after some delicious made-from-scratch ice cream from Frite + Scoop, the cutest little ice cream shop that a local recommended.  Not that we needed any more ice cream on this trip.

our trip to oregon: yaquina head lighthouse

Hanging out at the Yaquina Head Lighthouse on our first day on the coast was one of my very favorite memories. Along with covered bridges, lighthouses are top on my list of favorite things to see. We got to hang out at the tide pools for a while, throw rocks, marvel at the views, spotted a whale, toured the lighthouse and climbed all the stairs to the top. Our kids had meltdowns due to no naps and that was our cue that we needed to drive and get something to eat. We stopped to see Devil's Punchbowl and then went into Lincoln City for pizza at Gallucci's. We were all happier after that. :)

^He thought it was really fun to roll on the rocks.

^I can't hide this bump anymore!

our trip to oregon: tillamook

The Tillamook Cheese Factory was one of the few places we knew we wanted to visit on our trip. We don't eat very much cheese and ice cream in our house, but when we do, it's usually Tillamook. We got to see them cutting and packaging the cheese. And we made sure to be hungry for dinner at the Cafe. Grilled cheese with real cheese. Yes please! Although with 39 flavors of ice cream, maybe we should have skipped dinner and just had ice cream.

our trip to oregon: party at Chitwood

I was quite surprised to read in an Oregon visitors guide that  there are still nearly 50 remaining covered bridges. I don't know what it is about covered bridges, but they are so charming and romantic. They remind me of back east.

I was super happy that Chitwood was totally on our way to Newport from Corvallis. So, yes, we stopped to celebrate my love of covered bridges. Sure love my family and all of my silly requests. I like to think I'm teaching my children to enjoy the little things in life. In this case though, it was big.
